if/whether

if or whether (the choice is optional) is used for reported questions that do not start with wh words.

He asked if I was hungry.


Note the word arder change:
'Are you angry?' ► He asked if I was angry.
'Did you see the film?' ► She asked whether I had seen the film.

Direct questions reported with if/whether

Read the sentences below and fill in the missing words.

'Do you like Marlon Brando?' she asked. (if)
She asked if I liked Marlon Brando.

'Are you enjoying yourself?' he asked. (whether)
He asked I  (2 words) myself.

'Does your father work here?' she asked. (whether)
She asked (4 words) here.

'Do you live near your family?' he asked. (if)
She asked I near my family.

'Are you a foreigner?' she asked. (if)
She asked (3 words) a foreigner.

'Have you met Danny befare?' he asked. (whether)
He asked (5 words) before.
